2012+2013
I hadn’t thought a whole lot about it until the last week or so, but 2012 was my best year since I moved to Utah. Let’s hit the highlights:
1) Indie Ogden
I started writing for Indie Ogden back in February, with my first piece being a review of my now favorite pizza joint, Lucky Slice Pizza. Since then, I’ve worked up to being an editor as well as helping with business development and directing technology. We’ve raised money for the Tears Foundation, started the Indie Ogden Awards, doubled our readership, raised some operating money, and have done fabulous promotion for everything amazing in Ogden. It’s been amazing to work with Mikaela, Kristin, Jenny, and Lauren and a fun challenge to figure out how to build readership and revenue. This time last year, I would have never guessed how much I would put into this site or the incredible things we’ve done.
2) Developers, Developers, Developers
I also haven’t written as much code this year since maybe my senior year of college. I rewrote maproulette, created Scorebot 9000, helped create Trip Muse over Startup Weekend (which we are still developing), coded Access databases for work, did a few freelance projects, and got serious about using/developing for Wordpress. I’ve coded in C#, VBA, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, XML, CSS, Java, used tons of new tools and technologies. And I loved every minute of it.
3) Travel
I’m not entirely sure how many trips I’ve taken this year, but it’s probably somewhere around 30. I flew over 50K miles on Delta, some more on Southwest, earned Diamond status with Hilton. I visited WA, OR, CA, ID, UT, NM, AZ, CO, WY, IL, MN, MI, MN, VT, NH, CT, RI, MA, NY, PA, DE, NJ, VA, FL, GA, TX, OK, TN, and Canada. I saw my cousin get married, six of my friends all get married, took a road trip from Virginia to Maine, went to NM to ride a century with my mom, visited DC, CHI, and NYC.
These three things ended up being the defining pieces of 2012, and I would have no problem making them the focus of 2013. I definitely will be coding more, as I’d forgotten how much I love it. There’s some exciting things happening with Indie Ogden, and I’m very much looking forward to making them happen this next year.
Some statistics:
I earned 638,332 Nike Fuel and hit my goal 179 times. I ran 359.13 miles, with an average pace of 8'11"/mi. I also set personal records on Nike+ for fastest 1K (3:44), fastest 5K (20:06), and fastest mile (6:06).
